Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who died in the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, calling his demise “unimaginable.” Rupani, 68, was among the 241 people onboard the London-bound Dreamliner that crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday afternoon.
Modi, who visited the crash site earlier in the day, also met the injured victims at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Later, he met Rupani’s wife Anjali Rupani and other grieving family members at the GujSail building near the airport.
In an emotional message posted on X, the Prime Minister remembered Rupani as “humble and hardworking,” and someone who “rose through the ranks” of the BJP with dedication. He highlighted their long-standing camaraderie and Rupani’s contributions to Gujarat’s development, especially in improving ease of living during his tenure.
Rupani served as Gujarat Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021 and held multiple roles in his political career, including Rajya Sabha MP, Rajkot Mayor, and BJP state president. At the time of his death, he was overseeing the party’s activities in Punjab.
